Other Great Kids Resources

I have posted in the past several books that we have used and are using with our children. I wanted to share a few more for those of you that may be looking for presents or for your own kids/toddlers. These are all solid in doctrinal truths.

We love to read this with our toddlers. The stories are just the right length, without too much text, and the pictures are beautiful.

My husband got these books at a conference. Our daughter loves them. They are teaching her about who God is. I would say that they are great for young toddlers- they are board books. Click here to see them all.

Girl Talk

I asked for the book Girl Talk for Christmas and my wonderful husband got it for me. I have been reading it and wanted to recommend it for mothers and daughters alike. It has been a good book for me in dealing with my relationship with my our mother and I can see where I will need to come back to it in the future when relating to my own daughter.

I think that this book is for mothers and daughters of all ages to read and discuss together.

2009

So far 2009 has been filled with sickness! First my kids, then me, then my kids- hopefully we will be over it soon. I wanted to share some books that I got for Christmas that I am excited about reading. I will post some more over the next few days.

Books I am Reading

 I have had this book for a while and not really read much of it. I am at a point now that I NEED all the biblical help I can get with training and disciplining my son. This is an excellent book. I found I was doing some things right and that I also need to work on some things. It is great because it helps you with discipline at different ages. Some much needed encouragement and focus.

 This is a book that shows research and gives plans for sleep with babies and up. I have only read a little, but this is needed as well right now. My two year old has decided to sin and rebel against sleep. Which as you can imagine is not good for anyone involved. He is overtired and that makes it even more difficult. I am reading to get him back on track for good sleeping habits. It started with the freedom of a toddler bed and has just escalated from there. He used to sleep 12 -13 hours at night and we are down to 7-8. That drastically has affected his behavior. Keeping him in bed at night is another issue. So if you want to know more about how often your child should sleep and other information this is a great tool. Here is the book.

 I am also reading this for fun. My husband gave it to me a while ago. I love Jane Austen. Peter Leithart does a great job of looking into her novels.

Book Talk

I told you earlier that I would be reading the book Helper By Design. Well, there are several ladies that I am meeting with at church and we are reading this book together. We have had great discussions and I am looking forward to finishing the book. I just thought I would post some of the things that the Lord pointed out to me in this chapter.

1. The Lord has commanded my husband to love me (Ephesians 5:25) How am I making that easy for him? It is my obligation to help him in doing this!

2. I long to be known by my husband, but I know that I do not always long to know him as I should. She says, "we wives have been called to help and companion our husbands, a task that will be impossible if we aren't growing in our knowledge of them."

3. The only one who will ever completely know us is the Lord.

There are many other things that I have been challenged by in this book. Hopefully I will post more later. If you are reading this with me, feel free to comment on some things you are learning.

New Book

I just started reading a new book my husband got me for Mother's Day. It is called Helper By Design - God's Perfect Plan for Women in Marriage by Elyse Fitzpatrick. I hope to blog about this book as I read further. I know this is something that most women who are married may struggle with. I am praying that the Lord will use this book in my life, by His grace and for His glory.

Great New Book

My husband just got me a new book to read. It is called Bound for Glory: God's Promise for Your Family by R.C. Sproul,Jr. I am only through the first couple of chapters of the book, but I love what he is saying. He talks about the covenant of families- something that I think we need to hear more about. I would encourage anyone to get this book and read it.

Redeeming Love

I read the book Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers over two years ago. I finally got it back from my friend and I started reading it again. This is such a powerful story of the love and grace of God. The book retells the story of Gomer and Hosea, from scripture, and is set during the California Gold Rush.

As I read this book again I am reminded of who I am and who God is. How He has sought after my heart and loved me with an unconditional love that has redeemed me. This is a great book. Parts of it are hard to read, because sin is so destructive and horrific, but God does not leave His people there. He frees and sustains them from sin with His love.

A Home of Grace

For Mother's Day my husband gave me the book Building a Home Full of Grace by John and Susan Yates.

I just recently started reading it. I am often leery of ready marriage and family books when I do not know the authors, but this is a very helpful and practical book. I think it is especially good for me, still being a newlywed (2 years in October!), but I think it would also be helpful for those who have been married for a while. I am only about one-forth of the way through it, but God is using it to help re-shape my thoughts on my marriage and how it can be better and more glorifying to Him.

Books for $5

Desiring God is doing a great thing. They are having a book sale. Every book here will be $5 on June 27-28, Wednesday and Thursday next week. They say pass this on! So, enjoy looking for great books.

Great for Kids

My husband got this Bible for my son, who is only eight months old right now, and I love it! It is an excellent Bible that keeps Christ at the center of every story. I love reading it to my son, and he loves looking at the beautiful pictures. The Jesus Storybook Bible tells the beautiful love story about God redeeming a people for Himself, through Christ- which is the heart of the Bible. I have not found many children's books that convey that message. It is also great because it uses child-friendly language and explains the truth without watering it down. This is something I would recommend for anyone to buy a younger child.

I have also used Read Aloud Bible Stories and Leading Little Ones to God in working with children. They are both excellent in content as well.

Books for Women

My heart yearns to know how to be a godly woman, mother, and wife. As Titus two tells us, older women are to mentor us and help us to love our husbands and children.

Titus 2:3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

I believe that several women have tried to help us to live out those scriptures. I have been challenged, informed, and encouraged by reading books related to being a virtuous woman. So I will recommend the following books.

The Excellent Wife is a wonderful book written by Martha Peace. This book is very difficult to read because you will be convicted and challenged to be a woman with a Biblical perspective on your marriage and life. She does a great job of taking God's word and explaining it.

Feminine Appeal by Carolyn Mahaney is an excellent book. This book is not only for wives and mothers, but I think that all women who want to be virtuous can read this and lean how to love and treat others. She basis the book on Titus 2 and goes through seven virtues of being a Godly wife and mother. I have read this book several times and have been reminded of what God has called me to be.


For Women Only by Shaunti Feldhahn is a book that tells you "what you need to know about the inner lives of men". That is exactly what she writes about. She spoke with men, made surveys, and interviewed men of all ages, believers and non-believers, and came up with this great book to help us. My husband gave it to me for Christmas and I was hesitant to read it, but I am very glad that I did. We had many great conversations about how he thinks. There was a lot that I did not know! I think that God used this book to change my actions so that I can help my husband more.

These are only three books that I have enjoyed reading. I am sure that there are more written on this subject. I would encourage women to read these books along with the Bible and seek out what it means to be a Godly woman. Always remembering that God's Word is the final authority!

Great Book

I have been reading a wonderful book by Noel Piper, Faithful Women & Their Extraordinary God. It is great for those who enjoy reading about heroes of the faith. She writes about Sarah Edwards, Lilias Trotter. Gladys Aylward, Esther Ahn Kim, and Helen Roseveare. Some of these women I had never heard of before, but their lives are extraordinary. God used them to do many great things for His kingdom. It makes me long to serve Him with all that I have! These were women who lived out the truths of the Bible and sought the Lord with all that they had. They lived lives of faith that we can all learn from. May God help us to be faithful for the generations to come!

This is a great book that I would recommend women to read- or anyone who is interested in seeing God work through His people.
