Fireproof

The other night we finally rented the movie Fireproof. I admit I was skeptical about watching it. Usually movies that are made through Christian organizations are cheesy, poor acting, or the story line is not that great. I had head reviews about this movie and wanted to see it, so we did.

I admit, I was surprised. It was a good movie. I will confess that some parts were cheesy, and some acting could have been better, there could have been more to the story- but it was a wholesome movie. I would recommend it to others to watch. You can read what others have said here, here, and here.

I do wish that the Gospel was more of a focus in the movie- in fact it should have been the focus. They depended a lot on love- but without the Gospel it is impossible to love that selfless love. We went to a wedding the other day and I was confronted with this problem there as well. The people getting married were believers, but there was no mention of the Gospel at their wedding. We are in such a "me" driven culture/sinful nature. We cannot find the strength or even the desire to love apart from Jesus through the Gospel.

Good Movie(s)

We have been renting movies and watching the newer and older versions. I must say that The Manchurian Candidate is a great movie. I enjoyed both of them. The older mover stars Frank Sinatra and the star of the newer is Denzel Washington. I would recommend that you watch the 1962 version first. It gives more detail and explains more of the story. But the 2004 remake has a little more action and the plot is a little bit different. I must say that watching these movies during an election year is very interesting!!

100th Post!!!

So, this is my 100th post! Hard to believe that I have made that many!

I wanted to share a funny, old movie that we recently rented. I had seen it many time before...many years ago, but we rented it again. It is a rather silly, ironic, but clean and fun movie! The movie is  Arsenic and Old Lace
I like many Cary Grant  movies. This one makes me laugh. So, if you are into old movies, this is one to see.

The 10 Commandments

We went and saw the movie- The 10 Commandments- this weekend with some friends. It was a good movie. It did not stick completely with the story of Moses, but it was close. There were funny parts to it too.
I get frustrated because I don't see why they cannot follow the story line in the Bible. The story of Moses is incredible, they do not need to add or take anything away, but Hollywood does what they will.
It was a good movie, I would just talk with my kids about the things they changed and what God's Word says really happened.

Mr. Darcy??

Well, I just saw the trailer for a new movie The Last Legion and it has Colin Firth in it. For those of you who do not know... He is Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. So it will be interesting to see him in a very different kind of role than I am used to seeing him in. I know that he has been in several different movies...But, to me he will always be Mr. Darcy!!

Premonition

I have not posted in a while, but we have been very busy. We did actually rent a movie the other night. It was Premonition with Sandra Bullock. The movie was very interesting. I do not want to spoil it for those who have not see it, but it did have some Biblical truth to it.

All I will say is this: You cannot stop or change the plans of the Lord (Isaiah 46:8-11). Which is a great comfort to me. That God has ordained all my days and I cannot change His perfect plan for my life (Romans 11:33-36). He is actively a part of every moment of my days, and I am not in control (Romans 9:14-23) (Matthew 10:29-31). I am not more powerful than my Lord. He is constantly watching over me (Psalm 121). No matter what happens it will be for my good and His glory!! (Romans 8:28)(Genesis 50:20)

So I would say this was a good movie, rent it for yourself!

Not Good

I read Not Very Becoming to Jane on the blog Solo Femininity and I was sad. I was looking forward to seeing this movie because I am a huge Jane Austin fan, but it looks like I should spend my money on better things. Read her article and decide for yourself.

Her closing words were:

Bottom line: Save yourself the $10 and watch the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice. It's much better.

I would have to agree. That is one of the best movies!!

Another Good Movie

Well, I took my friend Meredith's advice and rented Miss Potter. It was Great! I did not know a lot about her life and was captivated by the love story. I will not spoil any of the movie, all I will say is go and rent it. Beatrix Potter was an interesting person and her life made a great story.

Becoming Jane

We rented The Queen last night. It was a good movie. I am not sure how much of it was true, but the acting was good. That is all besides the point. One of the previews last night was for a new movie. I was very interested to see that they are making a movie about Jane Austen called Becoming Jane. It looked like it was going to be good. It will be interesting to see if her life was similar to that of her characters. The movie comes out August 2007. We will see if it is any good! I have not read much about Jane, but have read many of her works! I hope I am not disappointed.

Good Movies to Rent

Both of these were excellent movies that made me think. I like movies that I cannot figure out to easily! These are both similar in nature- they are about magic. But they have very different story plots and I truly enjoyed watching them. It is hard to find a good movie, but I think both of these are! Enjoy wathing them.

What a HUGE Disappointment!

Last night we rented the movie One Night With the King. I had been looking forward to seeing this movie because I love the Biblical account of Esther . It is an amazing story of how God takes care of His people and how He uses ordinary people to do incredible things. So... we rented it. I had not really followed the reviews when the movie first came out and I was not even sure if it would be good. Well, that leads us to the title of this post "What a HUGE disappointment!!"

First of all, the entire focus of the movie was not on God, nor did it follow the Scriptures (they did have some facts, but they were few). I think a more appropriate title would have been Haman and His Revenge or The Jewish Necklace. My choice for these two titles would be for the fact that the plot of this movie seemed to be only about those things. Haman was angry and wanted revenge on the Jews and Esther had a necklace that when it was in the light, it would show the star of David.

I am ok with them adding in some conversations that seem to be relevant. We do not know some of the exact words that were spoken because the Bible does not give "word for word" all of the time. But they completely changed parts of the story that were very important. The movie added characters that were not needed and frustrated me beyond belief!

I do not know why we feel that we need to add or take things away from the Bible. It is jammed full of action, love, failing, victory, battle, romance, truth, evil, good... you name it and it is in the Bible. So why would we need to change any of it. The story I watched last night was meaningless and very heartbreaking to me. The truth that is in God's Word is so amazing. It breaks my heart that they made it seem so trivial and pointless.

So needless to say, I did not like the movie- if you couldn't tell!

I pray that we do not make the same mistake when we read and study God's Word. We need not add or subtract anything from it.
